Ringworm
Ringworm, medically known as Tinea corporis, is a fungal infection spread with contact. Athlete’s foot jock itch and nail infections are other types of Tinea, stemming from the same bacteria as ringworm. Ringworm appears as red, raised-edged circles on the skin which vary in size.
The fungus at the root of these conditions is highly contagious, often occurring in contact-sport athletes, people who live in tropical, humid climates and people who share non sanitized items such as razors, towels and nail tools.
Most forms of Tinea corporis can be treated with topical antifungal creams. Severe, unresponsive or widespread cases can be treated with higher-grade antifungals such as griseofulvin or terbinafine. Cure rates are excellent, but recurrence is high.
