Sclerotherapy is a treatment for varicose veins or spider veins, usually present in the legs. Dilated veins usually appear due to genetics, prolonged standing, obesity or pregnancy. People often seek treatment for varicose and spider veins because of their appearance and pain that is often experienced with their presence.

Sclerotherapy is a technique whereby an irritating solution (typically a detergent called sodium tetradecyl sulfate) is injected into the unwanted vein, causing the vein to become very inflamed. This causes the vein to scab down, preventing blood flow so that the veins become no longer visible.

There will be a stinging sensation with the injection of the sclerosant and a mild burning ache at the treated sites for several hours afterwards. Typically the treated veins will appear inflamed with swelling, redness and warmth. Over several days these symptoms gradually resolve and the vein will appear dark purple for several weeks. Slowly, over 1-2 months, the vein will gradually lighten in color and disappear.
